Why does SEO take so long?
Good, quality SEO takes a lot of time and effort, because if you want to do it correctly you have to put the time and effort in to get it done properly!
Good, quality SEO takes a lot of time and effort, because if you want to do it correctly you have to put the time and effort in to get it done properly!
A common mistake of the 'Internet novice' is to think you can make a Website for your business and BANG it will be found, this however is far from the truth. You need to know everything there is to know about SEO (Search engine optimisation) or employ someone that does, to do it for you.
As the saying goes 'Rome was not built in a day' and unfortunately this applies to SEO as well. There are plenty of SEO tricks to get ranked at the top of the SERPs quickly, but the results are short-lived as they usually involve spamming techniques which get quickly uncovered. Building authority with the likes of Google through links and content is a slow moving process, it takes time unfortunately just like building authority in your own offline life.
SEO techniques are constantly changing...
- New directories are popping up daily that your business needs listing on.
- Information may change such as business address/numbers etc that your SEO expert will need to change across the www to ensure fluidity of your information.
- Google's algorithm keeps flipping out new updates, that mean we have to change and implement new strategies, and sometimes rectify old ones.
- Social media is a big part of SEO so that will need frequently updating.
- Websites need updating repeatedly, particularly WP and Joomla based ones.
- Content will need refreshing and adding at a slow pace, so that Google keeps crawling and indexing your website.
- Competition can spring up form anywhere, your website might be number 1 for your desired keywords, but where your website has been left stale for a year with no new content or links etc, someone else who is doing quality SEO on theirs might take over you, this may be impossible to rectify!
Google not only uses its spiders to crawl websites buy also uses human verification, so some people might think they have ways and means of tricking the spiders but if it gets pulled up by human web evaluators then your black hat techniques will soon catch up with you. It's really not worth wasting months work of time and effort to try and cheat the system.
Always remember:
- Get links from trusted content.
- Don’t get links from spam content.
- Link to trusted content.
- Don’t link to spam content.
So where as using black hat techniques may give an immediate result, it will not give a long lasting, authoritative result in Google, or any other search engine for that matter.
Types of SEO?
There are many SEO techniques out there, more than most people realise. This also contributes to the slow process of good quality SEO.
Here are some examples:
- White hat SEO: Where SEO is done naturally.
- Black hat SEO: Where SEO is done by spamming techniques.
- Grey hat SEO: Where a combination of both White hat and Black hat is there. Not easily recognisable by Google if someone uses this technique.
Google frowns upon any type of Black hat SEO so this should never be used.
Some good examples of 'White hat SEO' techniques are:
On Page optimisation:
URL optimisation Content optimisation Title optimisation Site Loading Page time optimisation Meta keyword optimisation Internal Linking XML sitemap.robot.txt
Off Page optimisation:
Social Bookmarking (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube etc) Press Release Submission Article Directory Submission Web 2.0 posting Directory Submission RSS feeds
And much more...

Another reason to keep SEO at a slow and steady pace is because there are many factors that can affect how long it takes for your site rankings to increase. Although search engines are constantly updating, they don’t update your link popularity as frequently. This happens about once every three months. In addition, all off page work also has to be indexed and compared with the indexing of the on page work on your website.
So if you build good quality links slowly, when Google sends it's spiders out to crawl your web pages every few months, it will notice you have fresh new content and or links and it will keep you up there and ranked higher than a website that gets crawled and has no new content. So for instance two practically identical Websites with the same niche get crawled and yours is the one with the newest content that's getting frequently updated, then that's the one that's going to rank higher. It could be the difference between 1st and 2nd place in the SERPs.
Analysing your competition
To be successful in SEO the first thing you need to do is check out your competition and see what works for them, especially the ones who are already established and ranking well in the SERPs (Search Engine Results Page). This can be invaluable as your competitors will already have been in your position at the beginning of getting their SEO up to scratch. You can use this to help yourself get a foot in the door for your niche market. But research takes time, you can't just outright copy what they do but you can deploy similar tactics and use them as a stepping stone for your Online campaign.
But of course it's not about being as good as your competitors, it's about being better than them to get the coveted spot in the top 3 results on page one for any given query, as that's where 90% of clicks are received. Let's face it, when do you or I ever click beyond page one?
Be aware!
There are many scam artists out there who are prepared to take your money and give you little in return, they prey on the Internet novice. They will speak to you in terms you don't understand and hope you are too embarrassed to ask about it.
I have myself been approached by many a novice and could have fully taken advantage, and I have come across many clients who have been taken advantage of for many years and have literally zero organic SEO for their business when I have taken over.
This is your money and your business, so always make sure you know exactly what you are getting for your money. I always give monthly updates of any SEO work I do for a company and suggest you demand the same.
